- Raise awareness & expectations. We don’t simply look the other way and let others worry about problems in our neighborhood. And we don't assume that because things have been a certain way for a long time, that they cannot be changed for the better.
- Build strong civic relationships. We‘ve developed excellent working relationships with SFPD, DA’s office, City Attorney’s Office, the Mayor’s Office, Supervisors, homeless and elder service organizations, local schools, and neighborhood stakeholders. City Hall knows and respects SCG.
- Eradicate graffiti. Graffiti vandalism demoralizes neighborhoods. Our local Green Patrol graffiti abatement program keeps the neighborhood almost completely graffiti-free at no cost to residents or merchants.
- SCG Court Watch. The best way to ensure that dangerous people don’t simply get put right back on the streets, only to re-offend, is to have neighbors in the courtroom. Judge and DA take cases much more seriously when they are held to account.
- Cell phone patrols. Our volunteers patrol the area, alerting Mobile Assistance Patrol and SFPD of homeless encampments in the Park or on sidewalks/in doorways. No matter how they feel about the politics of homelessness, SCG members agree that permitting people to sleep on the streets does no one any good. There ARE alternatives, and we all want to bring homeless people and available services together.
- Street-to-Life-Challenge. As part of our efforts to eliminate vagrancy in our neighborhood, we’re challenging homeless service organizations to come to our neighborhood and actively engage the homeless who have settled in and around Dolores Park. We strongly support city-sponsored efforts like Homeless Connect, that aggressively campaign for people to utilize the services available to them in the hope that they can get on the road to more productive lives.
- Mission High School gardening & grounds maintenance program. Our members currently maintain the previously blighted planter beds around Mission High School, and with the support of the school administration are developing a training program that will eventually put civic-minded Mission High students and those needing to fulfil graduation requirements in charge of the job.
- Litter-Me-Not & Dump-Me-Not program. Tired of seeing couches, someone’s household garbage, or a pile of worn tires dumped on streetcorners? So are we! We work to address this serious problem, which, like graffiti vandalism, erodes the quality of life in our neighborhood.
- SCG Monitor. A regular eNewsletter digest of communications and announcements from our Yahoo! group site, our primary means of communication.
- BusinessMatters. A bi-annual newsletter to every merchant in our neighorhood. It’s good business and a great way to build community.
- …and much more. Please join us!
